For some things, it's perfectly legal. For example, you can download things like patches or F2P game clients over bittorrent. Bittorrent offers faster speeds than other methods of downloading files.

For other things not so much.

However, asking for links to torrents and such is strictly forbidden in this forum.

Are movies & music illegal?

Yes. Don't ask for or post any links in this forum, it will result in a ban.

It's perfectly legal to use bittorrent for anything to download. But once you start sharing stuff like music, movies or non-F2P games, it starts to be illegal.
At least, that's how I thought it is/was.

Depends on your national laws.

In Canada, even with copyrighted material, sharing person to person (p2p) is not illegal, whether it be movies, music or games. However, making profit off of copyrighted material or using it commercial is illegal.

Not if you own the original iirc.
EG I own a dvd of some movie and then I can have it on my pc if I don't share it.

Torrents are legal.

Downloading copyrighted material without the owner's consent isn't.

Simple as that.

I think there's something like a 500,000$ fine and 25 years sentence involved. Not sure though.

But I am sure that the FBI has a lot more to deal with than a million people copying music and games for private use. So for the most part as long as you don't go selling your shit, you're ok.

It's legal.
I know because I had some guy come over to my house to fix my sisters computer, and he was the torrent file and he was like "I use that too".
He worked for a computer company and stuff, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't allow illegal stuff.
And if it was illegal, then howcome all torrent sites haven't been shutdown?

Computer companies do more illegal things that makes it easier for them, any idea how many companies have to pay a fine for that sort of stuff? ;)

It's def illegal, just like downloading music in holland is about to become illegal. Simply cos the companies don't have any costumers anymore because every1 just downloads everything.

It's about the content, not about the platform <.< ... just that BitTorrent has and still does kick ass.

Because of the content they serve. Not the service they provide.

Yeah a lot of torrent sites have a disclaimer saying that they aren't responsible for the content shared on their site, and that it's the users responsibility.
