Looks pretty good.

As for the "blocking" idea, it shouldn't be hard to accomplish with your 2nd image. Just add an alpha layer and cut the black/white background out. Then start overlapping the boxes you made so it comes together.

You don't necessarily need to move your image around to do the blocks idea. Just draw your block outlines over the image, already overlapping each other, and erase the parts between. Does that make sense?

Of course, that won't give you the most advanced version of the blocks concept, but it's a good start and it will give you the type of blocks sig in Jazz's post.

Make the sig you want, when it's completely done, make a new layer + apply image.
Now, make a new file be sure to make it transparrant, then drag the layer you made before on this new file.
Now you can start cutting, moving etc. And once you're done save it as PNG.
Sorta .. easiest way to do this.
Personally I don't really like them, simply because.. they usually turn out H-U-G-E <= :!:
